Course Description

In this course, students will become familiar with the Talmud’s approach to the Torah as a whole, and be introduced to many of the unique characteristics and challenges that are present when studying from the original text.

Learning Outcomes

  • A deeper appreciation for Talmud study, its underlying aim and its methodology.

  • An understanding of the Talmud’s unique place in the realm of Jewish scholarship.

  • Becoming familiar with the back-and-forth nature of a Talmudic sugya.

  • Insight into how Talmudic discussions serve as the raw material upon which the rest of Jewish legal scholarship is based.
